Memorial to the Medieval Shrines destroyed in Chelsea in 1538

The Art and Reconciliation Trust (ART) has commissioned the internationally renowned sculptor Paul Day to create a Memorial to the medieval shrines destroyed in Chelsea during the English Reformation.

It is proposed that the Memorial should be situated on the Chelsea Embankment near to Chelsea Manor where the statues from the most famous shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mary were brought and burned in the presence of Thomas Cromwell in 1538.

ART has embarked on a Fundraising Appeal of £1,250,000, the current estimated total cost of the project. The memorial will be in the form of a bronze sculpture on a granite base which will include historical information about the Reformation and twelve scenes of the life of Mary Most Holy in light relief, the overall size being fourteen foot wide and ten foot high. The enclosed brochure provides background information on both the project and Paul Day, who will be presenting a maquette showing his proposals at the Launch of the Appeal on Tuesday 29th April 2008.

As Chair of ART, I hope you will find this project as compelling and exciting as we do.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs F. E Scarr
Chair
